She stormed onto the international stage with this anthem of teenage angst(1). Nine years later and with this, her latest single, Canadian singer-songwriter Avril Lavigne still proves to be a firm favorite. One of the things that's really interesting about you is that when you look at songs that are, you know, the more upbeat(2) ones like Girlfriend, they're really sort of bratty(3) happy, but then the more slow tempo(4) ones like When You're Cone, they're a lot more thoughtful(5) and kind of anguished(6) in a way. Does that contradiction(7) tell us something about you as a person?

Yeah. As a human being I have different emotions and there's a side... I'm a very deep person. Sometimes I can be very serious and introverted(8) and quiet and, you know, I think a lot and that's why I'm a songwriter, because I go to that place. And of course, then there's a side of me that, you know, just a chick(9). I like to have fun, I like to be spontaneous(10), I like to live on the edge a little. So, you know, I love with my music to have that diversity(11) and to go out on stage and to rock out(12) and to have my guitar and run around, but I also love the feeling of just sitting down at a piano and just singing alone to that.

Let's talk about your fashion sense, because your look has been emulated(13) by fans, you know, right back since the days of Complicated. These days though, you're on the front cover of magazines. How has your style changed over the years?

我们来淡谈你的时尚观，因为自从你发行《复杂》这首单曲以来，歌迷就一再模仿你的装扮。近来，你更是成为杂志封面的常客，你的装扮风格在这些年来有什么变化？

Well, definitely I would say since my first album my style is ... it's a little more feminine(14) than before. On my first album I was wearing a lot of, like, guys' pants, baggy(15) clothes and stuff like that. I mean I was 17 and I was kind of a little tomboy(16), and that you would never see me wearing a dress or heels on my first record.

嗯，确实，自从我的第一张专辑发行以来……我会说我的风格比以往变得更女性化了。在我发行第一张专辑的时候，我穿了很多类似男生的长裤、松垮垮的衣服和那类的东两。我是说，我当时17岁，有点像有男孩子气的女生，所以你在我的第一张唱片里绝对看不到我穿女装或高跟鞋。

Now, I’m a lot more into fashion and I have a clothing line, and it's called Abbey Dawn, and I started that a couple years ago. And fashion really ties into my music. Like, I have so many photo shoots and video shoots and I'm up on stage so, you know, I'm constantly thinking about what I'm gonna wear and what I want to wear and how I want to express myself.

现在我比较注重时尚，也有自己的服饰品牌，叫做Abbey Dawn，几年前我创立了这个品牌。时尚也和我的音乐密不可分。比如说，我需要拍很多照片和影片，也要在舞台上表演，所以我总是不断地想自己要穿什么、想穿什么，要怎么表达自我。

So, it's been really fun to kind of see with each album when I change, to see the fans at the show kind of emulate and, my style, and the first record... a lot of the kids in the crowd were wearing neckties like I was. Now you'll see a lot of girls with pink hair, and it's cool.

所以，人们能够随着我的每一张专辑看到我的变化，看到来看表演的歌迷模仿我的风格，确实很有趣。我出第一张专辑的时候……人群里有很多小朋友像我一样系着领带。现在你会看到很多女孩子染了粉红色的头发，确实很酷。

Early last year, Avril Lavigne created a foundation(17) in her name. Its aim is to work with other charitable(18) organizations to raise awareness and support children and teenagers living with an illness or a disability(19). Recently, you've definitely been giving back through your Avril Lavigne Foundation Tell me about it and also what it means to you to be in a position to do something like that, something that's truly good.

去年年初，艾薇儿以自己的名字命名成立了一个基金会，目的在于和其他慈善机构合作，呼唤大家关注并扶助患病或有残疾的儿童与青少年。你近来确实通过你的艾薇儿基金会对社会回馈很多。跟我谈谈这一点，还有能够做这样的事情，做些很棒的善事，对你有什么意义。

I've had a lot of opportunities to give back and to do charity, charity events, and get involved different programs and stuff, and basically I just wanted to take it to the next level to really be able to give back as much as I possibly can.

我有很多机会可以回馈社会，从事慈善工作、出席慈善活动、参与各种不同的慈善项目之类的。基本上，我只是想要再进一步，尽一己之力来回馈社会。

I wanted to have my own foundation for a while and now that I'm just starting it, I'm so excited because it's gonna be a huge learning process and I can't wait to get my fans involved so they can contribute(20). And I'm developing programs right now.

我想要成立自己的基金会已经有好长一段时间了。现在我才刚起步，我很兴奋，因为这一定会是一段内容很丰富的学习过程。我已等不及要让我的歌迷参与其中，让他们一起奉献爱心。我现在正在做一些计划。
